A Failed Vintage Manicure

I tried doing a 40's manicure with the moons at the cuticles and the edges also free of polish, like the picture above. I used French Manicure stickers instead of ring binders as I wanted a nice crisp edging......as you can see it didn't work out very well.

I started with 2 coats of Cult Nails Enticing for the base.

And chose China Glaze High Maintenance as the main color.
The trick is to be patient waiting for your base color to dry properly, instead of lashing on Seche Vite and waiting 5 minutes before taping. Then waiting AGAIN for your main color to dry before peeling off the stickers.

I am not a patient person.

So I ended up painting over the edges and finishing with a thick coat of Seche QD.

Anyone else tried sand failed at the 40s manicure?

  4. Good effort though! How about trying to freehand it and then cleaning it up with acetone? Or maybe using a little nail brush to draw it out first then filling in the space? I'm sure you will get there :)

  6. Ooo, I should try that. My nails are NOT long and oval enough, but I think if I freehanded it it could look good...

  8. Your nails are the perfect shape for that awesome Mani!! Keep trying! I always remove tip guides/stickers when the polish is still wet for crisp lines it takes longer to do one nail at a time, but the polish doesn't dry to the tape and cause issues during removal! I think your end result looked great!!

  9. I'm just as impatient as you are, and I can't find any paper reinforcing stickers so that's why i've never done the half moon mani...but i've ruined so many tape manis due to my impatience, at least your base color doesn't show where your tape was by being pulled off and molded back onto the nail lol

  12. I also always have this problem with taping mani's.
At least, you were still able to save a part. Mine usually fail completely...
